4.11 Batch Simulation

A batch runs one setup across several values of a condition, such as wind speed or rotation speed, and every combination of those values becomes its own simulation. You enter the values in Physics, submit them in Solve, follow them in the Batch Monitor, and compare them in the Batch Comparison report.

Batch is not available on the Free plan. Paid plans can run a set number of simulations per batch, which the workbench shows as you add values, and a batch can never contain more than 500 simulations.

1. Physics: Enter the Values

Fields that can be swept offer a Single / Batch choice. Select Batch, then enter the values one of two ways:

  • Direct Input: Type the values, separated by commas.
  • Range: Enter Start and End, then either Step (values are generated at this interval) or Count (the span is divided into this many values).
AnalysisConditions you can sweep
External flowWind Speed, Angle of Attack (Body Pitch with Ground), Sideslip
Rotating flowWind Speed, Rotation Speed, rotor angle of attack
StructuralLoad values (Pressure, Facial Force, Displacement) and Material Assignment Groups
Rapid AerodynamicsWind Speed, and rotation speed on projects with propellers

The number of simulations is the product of the value counts. Three wind speeds and four angles of attack make twelve simulations. The workbench shows the running total against your plan's limit, and if you reach it, remove a value from another condition to add more.

On external flow, the Freestream fluid domain type turns the wind instead of the body, so an angle sweep runs on a single mesh.

2. Solve: Run the Batch

The Batch Process card lists every combination of the chosen conditions, with the number of simulations and meshes it takes. Simulations that can use the same mesh share it.

  1. Check the estimated credits. Estimated Total Solver Cost is shown as a range.
  2. Optionally, click Generate Meshes for N Simulations to generate or reuse the meshes without solving.
  3. Click Run Batch · N Simulations to submit every simulation in the plan.

Simulations held at Awaiting Approval wait for you to confirm the credits. Start them with Start N Awaiting Simulations.

3. Batch Monitor

Click Batch Process in the status bar to open the Batch Monitor. It lists each simulation of the batch with its status, condition values and progress.

  • Choose Batch: Switch between the batches in the project.
  • Filters: Narrow the list by status (All, Running, Queued, Success, Failed, Cancelled) or by mesh.
  • Search: Find a simulation by name, value or mesh number.
  • Show in Viewport: Display that simulation in the 3D viewport.
  • Residuals: Open a simulation's residual chart.

3.1. Failed Simulations

View Cause on a failed row explains why the simulation failed.

3.2. Canceling

Select rows and click Cancel N Selected, or cancel from a row. Only the selected simulations stop, and completed meshes and other simulations are kept. For a mesh that is still queued or being generated, the simulations sharing that mesh are canceled together. Work already performed is charged.

3.3. Rerunning

A canceled simulation has a Re-Run button, so you can recover a batch without starting over. If the original inputs were not saved, the workbench tells you the simulation cannot be repeated with the same settings.

4. Report: Batch Comparison

In the Report step, select Batch Comparison under Report Layout. It plots every simulation of the batch against what was swept, and is available for external flow, rotating flow, static structural, transient structural, and Rapid Aerodynamics propeller and propeller-driven runs.

  • Key Results: Charts of the main outputs, each with a short statement of what changed. Change the axes with X-axis, Separate Lines and the hold control for the remaining conditions.
  • Iteration History: One line per simulation, so you can see which ones settled.
  • Data Summary: The values in a table, with a link to each simulation's report.

Reading the report:

  • Statements describe the plotted values, not their causes.
  • Each point is the value that simulation's own report shows: the final iteration for fluid, the maximum over the model for static structural, the peak over all time steps for transient, and the settled average for Rapid Aerodynamics.
  • Simulations that failed, have not finished or have no result are not plotted, and a note gives the count.
  • Click a point to open that simulation's report.

The same comparison opens from a batch job on the Jobs page.
